The Focus of Regenerative Medicine

06 Sep

When our bodies are injured or invaded by disease, it naturally heals and defends itself. This power of the body to heal and defend itself, when harnessed and accelerated in a clinically relevant way, can help the body heal better.

When tissues and organs in the body are damaged, regenerative medicine seeks to help restore structure and function of these tissues and organs. Solutions for organs that have become permanently damaged is one area of focus of regenerative medicine. Today, there are injureis and disease that are untreatable and regenerative medicine seeks to find ways to cure these.

They are conducting scientific research in order to make treatment available for clinical use. The procedures in these treatments are both in vivo and in vitro. In in vivo procedures, the studies and trials are performed inside the living body so that they can stimulate irreparable organs to heal themselves. Treatments are applied to the body through implantation of a therapy studied inside the laboratory, for in vitro procedures.

One of the concentrations of regenerative medicine is on medical devices and artificial organs. With regenerative medicine, the quality of life of patients worldwide can be improved. New body parts from a patient’s own cells and tissues are created by using powerful technology. Tissue rejection will be eliminated if the body part is from the patient’s own tissues and cells. With the medical devices created, a patient can sustain waiting long for a donor organ but it can also eliminate the need for a transplant altogether.

Tissue engineering and biomaterials is another focus of regenerative medicine. Regenrative medicine seeks to find a way to be capable of maintaining the body such that replacing whole organs will no longer be needed. Traditional medicines solution to destructive diseases is to give patients entirely new organs. The thrust of regenerative medicine is to grow organs from human cells and they have been successful in growing heart valves. A mold is created using biomaterials so that scientist can grow cells in the form of a heart valve. So if this is mastered in clinical trials, any transplant patient can receive a heart valve that is essentially their own so rejection will not be an issue. With regenerative medicine, they look forward to the  day when repairing heart valves can be done without surgery. Go to this site Oklahoma Institute of Regenerative Health.

Umbilical cords are discarded at birth, but it holds blood vessels that have about a half-cup of blood that belongs to the newborn child. The blood contains many stem cells. Our body uses stem cells as one way of repairing itself. Collecting and storing blood from the umbilical cord which contains stem cells can possibly be used in the future to help your body remain healthy. This is one concept that regenerative medicine is working to understand. Find out more on Oklahoma Institute of Regenerative Health
